University of Delaware Museums Russian Icon Internship
Russian Icons Internship
February 2008 to May 2008
Supervisor: Anya Shutov
During my internship, I was able to take part in several conservation projects, which included the rehousing, documentation, and stabilisation of two icons. I also learned the traditional techniques of constructing a Russian icon.
I gained various skills, including:
· Painted object conservation techniques such as overpaint removal, consolidation, filling, and inpainting
· Understanding traditional practices of Russian icon making
In the following year, I became a Teacher Assistant on the course, and was able to assist in giving instruction and guidance to students.
I am removing overpaint from a previous restoration campaign.
I am consolidating a Twelve Feasts icon with diluted stergeon bladder glue using a fine-tipped brush.
I used a small-tipped hot tacking iron and a piece of Mylar adhere cigarette paper and consolidate the paint layer.
