Paintings Conservation
July 2009 to September 2010
Supervisor: Helen Im
During my internship, I was able to take part in a large-scale conservation project both on-site in Peekskill and in the studio. This included assisting with the on-site removal, conservation, and transport of a “mural,” which consists of several canvases adhered to the walls of the entranceway to Peekskill Middle School (scheduled for demolition)
I gained various skills, including:
· Painting conservation techniques: cleaning, stabilization, facing, consolidation, removal of facing, and inpainting.
While the canvas was attached to the wall, I cleaned it with Absorene (vulcanized rubber sponge).
While the canvas was still attached to the wall, I consolidated areas of flaking and fragile paint. This was done using BEVA 371 applied on a small-tipped paintbrush. Then, a piece of silicon release paper was held over the area and a small-tipped tacking iron on medium heat.
After facing the canvas, I removed it from the wall manually.
