Organics Conservation Department
August 2013 to January 2014
Supervisor: Glen Smith
During my internship, I took part in the conservation and collections care of organic objects in the permanent collection, primarily model ships. I condition checked and conserved objects going on loan abroad and going on exhibition for the Guiding Lights: 500 Years of Trinity House and Safety at Sea; Forgotten Fighters: The First World War at Sea; and Maritime London exhibitions. I also assisted with the installation of objects in the National Maritime Museum's exhibitions Nelson, Navy, Nation and Maritime London as well as Chatham Historic Dockyard's collections gallery.
I gained various skills, including:
· Wood and furniture restoration techniques: cleaning, removal of old coatings, carving, fine shaping and sanding, filling, re-adhering components, colouring, gilding, and sealing
· Painted surfaces techniques: cleaning, consolidating, filling, inpainting, toning, and sealing
· Learning and improving carpentry skills
· Condition checking of objects going on exhibition, returning to stores from exhibition, going on loan, returning from loan
· Installation and movement of objects on display
